- 1885 – Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885 makes "gross indecency" (homosexual acts, even in private) a crime. The ‘Labouchere Amendment’ was known as the “Blackmailer’s Charter”.
- 1895 – Oscar Wilde convicted of gross indecency.
