North Yorkshire is a county in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of northern England. It was created in 1974 out of the former North Riding of Yorkshire, together with the northern half of the West Riding, parts of the East Riding, and the city of York. It contains most of two national parks, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

The county council area comprises seven districts, including Scarborough and Harrogate; additionally the ceremonial county includes four unitary authorities: the City of York, Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, and part of Stockton-on-Tees.

North Yorkshire Police covers the county council area plus the City of York; however Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, and Stockton-on-Tees (which had all been part of the county of Cleveland since 1974) are covered by Cleveland Police.
