Orkney, or The Orkney Islands, is an archipelago and council area off the north of Scotland. Its capital is Kirkwall.
The Northern Constabulary, covering the Highland, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland areas, was replaced in 2013 by the Police Service of Scotland.
LGBT history
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has lived in Orkney since 1971. He currently lives on the island of Sanday with his civil partner.
In 2007 there was a controversy when the Orkney Council refused to let Sir Peter celebrate his civil partnership on Sanday, insisting he would have to travel to Kirkwall for it.
