The University of Sheffield was founded in 1897 as the University College of Sheffield, and became a university in its own right in 1905. It occupies a number of buildings around the city of Sheffield.

LGBT societies

Sheffield University Homophile Society was founded in June 1970. It started a Gay Action Group in the winter of that year, but folded in early 1971. It is listed as a CHE group in Amiable Warriors Volume One.[1]

Sheffield University Students Union Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Executive is a former member of the LGBT Consortium and is listed as a member of ILGA.[2]

The University of Sheffield LGBT Committee was a member of the Coalition for Equal Marriage.
