The University of Leeds is a redbrick university in the city of Leeds. It received its royal charter in 1904, having previously been part of the Victoria University, alongside what became the universities of Manchester and Liverpool.

In March 1974 the University and Leeds Polytechnic hosted a Transvestite/Transsexual Conference [1]. In 1980 University student Geoffrey Brighton was refused a medical certificate 'fitness to teach' by the Student Health Service because of his homosexuality. The National Union of Students and CHE's Discrimination Commission took up his case [2].
