The University of Sheffield was founded in 1897 as the University College of Sheffield, and became a university in its own right in 1905. It occupies a number of buildings around the city of Sheffield.

Sheffield University Students Union Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Executive is a former member of the LGBT Consortium The University of Sheffield LGBT Committee was a member of the Coalition for Equal Marriage.
