Highland is a local government area in Scotland. It was formed in 1975 as a region with eight subsidiary districts. In 1996 the districts were abolished, and Highland became a unitary authority, making it the largest local government area in the United Kingdom.
The Northern Constabulary, covering the Highland, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland areas, is to be replaced in 2013 by the Police Service of Scotland.
