Birkbeck, University of London is a university located in Bloomsbury, central London. it specialises in part-time study, with most courses being taught in the evening. It was founded in 1823 by George Birkbeck as the "London Mechanics' Institute", subsequently renamed as the "Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution" and subsequently "Birkbeck College". It became part of the University of London in 1920, and adopted its present name in 2002.
