Uppingham

Uppingham is a market town in Rutland, six miles from Oakham. It is mainly noted for Uppingham School, a leading independent school, founded in 1584. The school has been co-educational since the 1970s.
LGBT history
John Wolfenden was headmaster of Uppingham School from 1934 to 1944. Notable old boys include:
- Norman Douglas, novelist
- Ronald Firbank, novelist
- James Elroy Flecker, poet
- Giles Fraser, clergyman
- Stephen Fry, actor (expelled 1972)
- Dr Christian Jessen, television presenter
