East London is an area of London that has had a number of different definitions.
For the purposes of the Mayor of London's London Plan 2011, the East London sub-region contains the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest.[1] However East London is more commonly taken to refer only to the area north of the river, typically Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest.
The East End is the historic inner core of East London, roughly equivalent to the borough of Tower Hamlets.
LGBT history
Walking Proud in East London is an LGBT oral history project hosted by the River Cultures Festival[2] and co-ordinated by Tim Bennett-Goodman.
There were two successive CHE groups in the early 1970s, both referred to as the East London CHE Group.
In March 1979 the East London GLF was reformed. Richard Prout of Queen Mary's College was a leading organiser in the group. An earlier East London GLF existed in 1972-3 [3].
In the 1980s there was a East London Lesbian and Gay Youth Group for under 30s.
Positive East is an HIV charity for East London.
The East London Out Project is a local health charity.
