LGBT History
The University of Cambridge has a rich history of gay students including law reform campaigner George Ives and the notorious Guy Burgess.
In 1970 John Hiles formed the Cambridge branch of CHE. The following year, Hiles, together with Chris Heron, set up Gay Cambridge. Hiles committed suicide in 1978 [1]. Toby Keynes (Gonville and Caius) flew the Cambridge Gay Liberation flag from the top of King’s Parade (from his rooms, in the corner tower) at Gay Cambridge's 10th birthday celebration at Easter 1981, and nearly got sent down.
