University of Wales
From LGBT Archive
The University of Wales was founded in 1893 as a federal university comprising three colleges, all of which later became universities in their own right: University College Wales (now Aberystwyth University), University College North Wales (now Bangor University) and University College South Wales and Monmouthshire (now Cardiff University). University College Swansea joined in 1920. Other institutions joined later. From 2007 onwards, the individual colleges began breaking away, and the University of Wales is to cease to exist from 2017.[1]
