Initially it tried to exclude gay men for fear of upsetting the straight clientele and the police were called, but it was subsequently reinvented as a gay pub.
The lesbian social group Sappho met there in the 1970s and 1980s.
In 1910 it was renamed The Chesterfield.
It has since closed.
