M R James, about 1900
M R James (Montague Rhodes James, 1862–1936) was an English author, medievalist scholar. He is best known for his ghost stories. He was Provost [head) of King's College, Cambridge and subsequent Provost (effectively chair of the governors) of Eton College.

He never married, and is sometimes thought to have been a repressed homosexual.
