J R Ackerley

J R Ackerley (Joe Randolph Ackerley, 1896–1967) was a writer, best known as literary editor of the BBC magazine, The Listener.
Born in London, he was educated at Rossall School in Fleetwood. Having failed the entrance examination for Cambridge he became an army officer, and served in the First World War. In 1917 he was captured by the Germans and sent to an internment camp in Switzerland.
