Highbury Fields

Highbury Fields

Highbury Fields is an open space in Highbury, in the London Borough of Islington. It has been known over the years as a gay cruising site.[1]

In 1970, Young Liberal Louis Eakes was arrested here for importuning, but denied the charge. The arrest provoked the Gay Liberation Front's first ever demonstration, which took place at Highbury Fields on 27 November 1970.[2] In November 2000, a plaque was unveiled in the Fields to honour the march.[3]
