The University of Chichester was founded as the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education in 1977 (combining three training colleges, one of which dated to 1839). In 1995 it became Chichester Institute of Higher Education. It gained degree-awarding powers in 1999, becoming known as University College Chichester, and became recognised as a full university in October 2005.
The main campus is adjacent to the Chichester Festival Theatre near the centre of Chichester. There is another campus near the sea in Bognor Regis.
