Aldershot is a town in the Rushmoor district of Hampshire. It has long been known as one of the British Army's major garrison towns.

LGBT history

A book by Xavier Mayne, privately printed in 1908, claimed that there were many soldier prostitutes in Aldershot [1].

Harold Gillies worked at the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot. In 1951 he carried out gender reassignment surgery on Roberta Cowell (previously known as Robert Cowell) (1918-2011), the first known male to female surgery in the country.


The singer Steve Strange grew up there.

The Canadian MP Libby Davies was born in Aldershot in 1953.[2]
