Mermaid Street
Rye is a small, picturesque town in the Rother district of East Sussex, one of the Cinque Ports. It is located on a hill, and in mediaeval times was almost entirely surrounded by the sea, however the sea is now about two miles away.

LGBT history

Lamb House, now a National Trust property, was the home of Henry James, E F Benson and H Montgomery Hyde, and featured as "Mallards" in Benson's Mapp and Lucia books. Other local residents have included Edward Burra, John Banting and Radclyffe Hall.
