Y-Services

A youth service in Hampshire, England which runs youth groups for LGBT young people aged 13-19 years of age. Many of the young people attending identify as transgender and controversially breast binding guidance is provided to young people who identify as trans males. Prior to Covid 19 restrictions in 2020, the group met in Havant, Fareham, Gosport and Winchester. From 2017-2019 Y-Services ran a Heritage Lottery Funded 'Voices for Heritage Project', capturing the LGBT history of Hampshire. As part of the project young people interviewed a number of older people who grew up LGBT in the 1960s,70s 80s and 90s. Oral interview recordings have been deposited in the Hampshire Archives in Winchester. In October 2018 the Winchester Group hosted a visit by author Patrick Gale during which an interview was recorded for the project. Richard Kirker has also been interviewed for the project. The recordings are deposited in the Hampshire Archives and Local Studies centre in Winchester. In 2019 the project had a display on Hampshire's LGBT History at the County Record Office in Winchester. The display was shown in Portsmouth History Centre in February 2020. The Winchester group ceased to exist sometime in 2021.
