It was founded in 1887 as the People's Palace. In 1915 it was renamed Queen Mary College, after the consort of King George V, and became a constituent college of [[London University]]. It later merged with Westfield College, and with the medical schools of St Bartholomew's Hospital and the London Hospital. As with several other institutions, it is now a largely independent university within the federal University of London.
