Medway is a unitary authority in north Kent, covering the area known as the Medway Towns (Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, and Rainham) plus the Isle of Grain. It is located on the River Medway near its confluence with the Thames Estuary. The current unitary authority was formed in 1998 by merging the City of Rochester-upon-Medway with Gillingham Borough Council and part of Kent County Council. Local landmarks include the old centre of Rochester with its castle and cathedral, and the former Chatham Dockyard.LGBT history
