It was created in 1974 and included four local government districts, Swansea, Lliw Valley, Neath and Port TalbotThe county was abolished in 1996, and replaced with two unitary authorities: Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. West Glamorgan was retained for ceremonial purposes as a preserved county.
It is part of the South Wales Police area.
