She was born in London and studied at the Universities of York and Sussex, completing her academic studies with a PhD on the American lesbian poet, Elizabeth Bishop.<ref>http://www.fiona-shaw.com/www.fiona-shaw.com/Welcome.html</ref>

Between 2007 and 2012 she was Royal Literary Fund writing fellow, first at the University of York and subsequently at the University of Sheffield. She has also taught courses in creative writing, literature and mental health and life writing at the University of York, in both the English Department and the Medical School; at York St John University; and within adult education.

She lives in York with her partner and two daughters.
