He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and went to school in Cambridge. After war service in the Royal Artillery, he took a law degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and trained as a solicitor in Guildford.[2]

He was a founding partner of the law firm Harbottle & Lewis, which specialised in the entertainment industry. His first client was Dirk Bogarde soon followed by Laurence Olivier.[2]

His relationship with Helge Magnussen lasted for 63 happy years, and in 2006 they became civil partners.[2]
