The Union Flag in its pre-1801 version, representing the Kingdom of Great Britain (excluding Ireland)

Great Britain is a term sometimes loosely used synomymously with the United Kingdom but strictly speaking referring to England, Scotland, and Wales together.

The Kingdom of Great Britain as a unified political entity came into being with the Act of Union in 1707, under Queen Anne. It was merged into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801.
