Queer Heritage and Collections Network
Queer Heritage and Collections Network (QHCN) is a UK-wide heritage Subject Specialist Network supporting professionals working with LGBTQ+ collections and histories. Established in 2020, it provides training, networking, and peer support to people across galleries, libraries, archives, and museums, and helps institutions develop public programming centred on LGBTQ+ themes.
History
QHCN was established in May 2020, founded through a partnership of five organisations: the National Trust, English Heritage, Historic England, Historic Royal Palaces, and the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) at the University of Leicester.[1] In 2021 the network was recognised with the Best Partnership Award at the Museums + Heritage Awards.[2]
In 2024 QHCN received Arts Council England National Lottery Project Funding, supporting its continued development as a national network.[3]
The network is overseen by a Steering Group chaired by Rachael Lennon and supported by founding partner representatives and invited members including Richard Sandell of the University of Leicester.
Activities
QHCN holds an annual Symposium showcasing innovative LGBTQ+ programming from heritage organisations across the UK and internationally, with open paper submissions, keynote speakers, and performances. It publishes a monthly newsletter, an LGBTQ+ Good Practice Guide, a Queer Family Friendliness guide, and an Academic Literature Review.
Membership is free and open to heritage professionals, academics, and freelancers at all career levels. As of 2026 the network has over 110 institutional members.
