The University of Portsmouth was founded in 1960 as Portsmouth Polytechnic, becoming a university in 1992.

LGBT societies

A University of Portsmouth Students Union Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Society was a member of the LGBT Consortium in 2012,[1] and was listed as a member of ILGA.[2]. In 2023 a LGBT+ Society was listed on the Student Union website [3]. A Kink Society for those into Bondage and Sadomasochism was listed on the Student Union website in 2023 [4].
