Gay Men's Press (GMP) was a London-based specialist publishing house founded in 1979, at a time when mainstream publishers were reluctant to take books by gay writers. It was part of the Millivres Prowler Group, which received the Independent Press Award at the Lambda Award Ceremony (from the United States-based Lambda Literary Foundation) in 2004 for its two book imprints, GMP and DIVA Books.[1]
Most of the company's output was paperback fiction, but they also published some books in hardback versions.[2]
Perhaps the most notorious of the company's publications was the children's book Jenny lives with Eric and Martin, which sparked off a furore leading to Section 28.
GMP ceased trading in 2006,[3] but many of their titles are now available from Heretic Books Ltd (formerly GMP Publishers Ltd).[4]
