Winchester University was founded in 1840 as the Winchester Diocesan Training School to train teachers. It was renamed King Alfred's College in 1928, and became a university in 2005. Its main campus is near the centre of Winchester.

Elizabeth Stuart, who specialises in Queer Theology is Professor of Christian Theology.
