The Gender Recognition Act 2004 allows people to legally change their gender from male to female or vice versa.

Applicants are required to have lived in their new gender for two years before they can be issued with a Gender Recognition Certificate. They are not required to have undergone surgery. Once they receive the certificate they can obtain a birth certificate in their new name and gender, and are entitled to be recognised in their new gender for almost all purposes.

A person who is currently married will only receive an interim certificate, to be replaced by a full certificate when the marriage is annulled.
