Notting Hill is a district within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. During the 20th century it became a deprived area, leading up to the Notting Hill race riots in 1958. It has subsequently gone up-market and is now a fashionable area to live and shop. The Notting Hill Carnival, held in August annually since 1966, is one of hte largest street festivals in the world. Notable fictional references include G K Chesterton's novel The Napoleon of Notting Hill and the 1999 film Notting Hill.
