Sport London is a charity set up by members of London’s LGBT sport, culture and social groups in order to bid to host the London 2018 Gay Games. The charity and bid were established by Jonathan Harbourne and Suran Dickson. The London 2018 project started in 2010, before the Cologne Gay Games, and the charitable entity was established in 2012, when it had to start paying fees for participating in the bid. In 2011, the Prime Minister hosted a reception celebrating LGBT sport to help promote the London 2018 bid.
Sport London’s aims are:
• To encourage and promote sport and healthy lifestyles among lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and trans people (LGBT) regardless of race, religion, sex, age or physical ability.
• To build a LGBT London sports community, linking individuals, organisations, clubs, and associations engaged in LGBT sport, ensuring an effective
communication between LGBTs in sport.
• To raise awareness about equality and diversity, combat discrimination and homophobia in sport, and working closely with other initiatives and organisations working on sexual orientation grounds.
• To promote LGBT engagement in sport and exercise through participation and/or volunteering in sport.
• Promote LGBT representation in mainstream sport and encourage LGBT involvement in the wider sporting community from elite to grass roots.
• In pursuit of these aims the organisation will promote equal opportunities and encourage gender parity.
