Shropshire (sometimes abbreviated Salop) is a county in the English midlands.
From 1974 onwards Shropshire was a two-tier authority, with a county council and six district councils, with the Wrekin (later Telford and Wrekin) as a separate unitary authority. In 2009 the six district councils were abolished, and the county council area became a separate unitary authority alongside Telford and Wrekin. There is also a ceremonial county of Shropshire covering both unitary authorities.
Shropshire is part of the West Mercia Police area.
