Summer Rites is a London-based open-air gay festival. It started in 1996, when the organisers Kim Lucas and Wayne Shires decided that London needed its own festival, at a time when London Pride was being seen as an event for the whole country, and other towns were having their own Pride events. The first Summer Rites was held in Kennington Park, but it moved to a much larger space in Brockwell Park for the next three years.[1]

After 1999 no further events were held until 2011, when it was revived as "Summer Rites Remix" in Shoreditch Park. The 2012 event is again being held in Shoreditch Park, on the 2nd of September.[2]
