Barry Evans (1943–1997) was a British actor, best known for his appearances in sitcoms such as Doctor in the House and Mind Your Language.
He was born in Guildford and early abandoned by his parents, to be brought up in an orphanage. He went on to the Italia Conti stage school and won a John Gielgud Scholarship to the Central School of Speech and Drama. He appeared as a sex-starved boy in the film Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1967).
Barry Evans' first major role was in the sitcom Doctor in the House (1970), loosely based on Richard Gordon's series of novels (which had previously been adapted as a series of feature films starring Dirk Bogarde).
In later life he became a minicab driver in Leicestershire. In 1997 he was found dead of alcohol poisoning in his bungalow. A young man was initially charged with murder but the inquest rturned an open verdict.
Following his death the Daily Mail published an article saying Evans had been bisexual: he had supposedly had a crush on the performer Lionel Blair, but the love of his life had been a woman whose husband was in jail for murder.[1].
