Northumberland is a county in the North East Region, and the most northerly county in England. It is a unitary authority - that is there is a county council but no district councils. Towns include Hexham, Morpeth, and Berwick-upon-Tweed. Prior to 1972 it also included {Newcastle upon Tyne]] and other major centres which are now in Tyne and Wear.
