The Western Buddhist Order, since 2010 known as the Triratna Buddhist Order, is a religious movement founded in London by Sangharakshita (Dennis Lingwood). He founded the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (now known as the Triratna Buddhist Community) in 1967, and the Order itself a year later. It has now spread beyond the UK, particularly to India.
In 1997 an article appeared in The Guardian' alleging homosexual abuse within the movement during the 1970s and 1980s[1]. The report caused a considerable stir at the time in Buddhist circles.[2] and a later official history of the movement has acknowledged the concern at the time,[3]
