Trafalgar Square is an open place in the centre of London (near Charing Cross, which is conventionally taken as the centre of London for measuring distances). It was laid out in the 1840s to commemorate Lord Nelson's naval victory at the battle of Trafalgar, 1805, and Nelson's Column is the most prominent of its many monuments.
Trafalgar Square has long been the favourite venue for demonstrations and rallies.
In recent years London Pride has culminated with a festival in Trafalgar Square.
In 2009 Ian Baynham was beaten to death in the square in a homophobic attack.
