The borough was formed in 1974 and was then part of the county of [[Cleveland]]. When Cleveland was abolished in 1996 Stockton-on-Tees became an independent [[unitary authority]]. For ceremonial purposes it is divided between [[County Durham]] and [[North Yorkshire]].

The Stockton and Darlington Railway, opened in 1825, was the world's first passenger railway.
