In 1966, while still an undergraduate, he stood as [[Liberal Party|Liberal]] parliamentary candidate for [[Mitcham]].<ref>''The Times Guide to the House of Commons 1966'', page 153</ref>

He has been active in LGBT organisations for many years. He founded the [[Tunbridge Wells CHE Group]] in 1972 and is an Executive Committee member of CHE ([[Campaign for Homosexual Equality]]) and committee member and former Secretary of [[Croydon Area Gay Society|CAGS]]. From 2008 to 2011 he was a Board Trustee of the [[LGBT Consortium]].

He was copy editor of <cite>[[Out of the Shadows (book)|Out of the Shadows]]</cite> (2010) and in the past has written books and articles on IT-related subjects. 

He edited ''[[Diverse Performances: Masculinities and the Victorian Stage]]'' by the late [[David Haldane Lawrence]], and is commissioning editor for ''[[Amiable Warriors]]'', both published by [[Paradise Press]]. Two of his stories are included in the anthology ''[[A Boxful of Ideas]]'' for which he did the typography.

He is webmaster for a number of organisations, including:

In 2002 Ross Burgess and [[Roger Burg]] had a [[London Registered Partnership]], followed in 2005 by a [[civil partnership]], which they converted to a marriage in 2015. Roger died in February 2017.

On 8 June 2019 Ross Burgess and [[Peter Burman]] were married in [[Falkland]], Fife, with an Affirmation of Vows a week later in the Unitarian Church, Croydon.
