It was founded in 1823 by George Birkbeck as the "London Mechanics' Institute", subsequently renamed as the "Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution" and subsequently "Birkbeck College". It became part of the [[University of London]] in 1920, and adopted its present name in 2002.
