In 2010 the writer [[Paul Magrs]] tweeted about the “scandalous lack of prizes for gay men” in the UK, which led to the journalist and blogger [[Simon Savidge]] approaching Paul about making an actual prize for gay men’s writing.<ref>http://greencarnationprize.wordpress.com/about/</ref> For 2011 the prize was opened to all LGBT writers.
