Shepherd's Bush
Shepherd's Bush is an area of West London, within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It is noted for Shepherd's Bush Green and the Westsfield shopping centre.
LGBT history
In the 1960s the toilets in the area were well known for soliciting and importuning and police observations. In November 1962 Wilfred Brambell was arrested in Shepherd's Bush and charged with importuning for immoral purposes. He was given a conditional discharge but the case was well reported in the national newspapers. In 1965 Raymond Harry Oppenheimer's arrest and acquittal at court led to the Home Office pressuring the Metropolitan Police to change its operations from plain- clothed to uniform [1]. The 1978 London Pride Parade terminated here.[2]
