The boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall highlighted within the West Midlands county

The Black Country is an area in the West Midlands roughly corresponding to the current boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, and Walsall. It is bordered by Wolverhampton to the north west and Birmingham to the south east.

The name dates from the 1840s and is believed to refer to the black soot from heavy industries that covered the area.
