Andy Hewlett is a police officer. He joined the Metropolitan Police in 1993, and discovered he was HIV positive during his probationary period. He had already decided to be out as a gay man in the police, having had to conceal it while he was in the army.
He disclosed his tatus to his bosses and colleagues, which led tothe Metropolitan Police devising its first policy for supporting HIV positive employees. He later took on a voluntary role as an HIV consultant for the Gay Police Association. He alsoe served as LGBT Liaison Officer for Lambeth.[1]
In 2011 while off duty with his partner, he and his partner confronted rioting youths in Croydon.[2]
