Middlesbrough is a town and unitary authority on the south bank of the River Tees. It was at one time a county borough; in 1968 it became part of the larger but short-lived county borough of Teesside. In 1974 it became a district within the county of Cleveland. In 1996 Cleveland was abolished, and Middlesbrough became a unitary authority within the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
