Bermondsey is an area on the south bank of the Thames, within the London Borough of Southwark.
The main landmarks are near the Thames, for instance London Bridge Station, the Shard, and City Hall. However the area a little to the south is probably more often considered to be Bermondsey as such.
Bermondsey by-election 1983
Peter Tatchell, standing as Labour Party candidate, was defeated in a by-election in February 1983 by the Liberal candidate Simon Hughes. The campaign was marred by homophobic abuse against Tatchell; ironically Hughes was himself bisexual, although this was not revealed at the time.
Other LGBT connections
The LGBT Consortium had its office for several years at the "Tower Bridge Business Complex" (actually the former Peak Freen biscuit factory).
The Turkish baths at the Bermondsey municipal baths, Grange Road, were a traditional gay meeting place, used by Kenneth Williams.[1]
