Peterborough is a cathedral city in the East of England. From 1889 the Soke of Peterborough had its own county council while being considered part of Northamptonshire. In 1965 it was merged with Huntingdonshire to form the county of Huntingdon and Peterborough, but this was merged with Cambridgeshire in 1974. Since 1998 Peterborough has been a unitary authority within the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire and is considered to be part of East Anglia.
