Medway is a unitary authority in north Kent, covering the area known as the Medway Towns (Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, and Rainham) plus the Isle of Grain. It is located on the River Medway near its confluence with the Thames Estuary. The current unitary authority was formed in 1998 by merging the City of Rochester-upon-Medway with Gillingham Borough Council and part of Kent County Council. Local landmarks include the old centre of Rochester with its castle and cathedral, and the former Chatham Dockyard.

LGBT history

There was a Medway CHE group in the 1970s.

The Ship Inn in Rochester High Street claims to be Medway's only gay pub,^[1] and was well-known as a gay pub in the 1980s.^[2]

In the 1980s and 90s there was a group called MAGIC -the Medway Area Gay Independent Community.

Magic was part of SEEG South East Gay Groups.

Medway Library has an LGBTQ page.^[3]
